Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is a major health problem in India and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) comprises 20% of all cases of TB. EPTB is more common in HIV positive individuals and immunocompromised patients. In immunocompetent adults it has been observed that EPTB constitutes 15%-20% of all cases of tuberculosis. The emergence of strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis that are resistant to antimycobacterial agents although not a new problem has recently received increased attention owing largely to outbreaks of drug resistant tuberculosis in HIV infected
people. The true global magnitude of drug resistant tuberculosis is not well described. Here we report a case of streptomycin monoresistant mediastinal tuberculosis in a 29 year old Medical student. We wish to report this case because of rarity of streptomycin monoresistant in a case of extrapulmonary tuberculosis in an immunocompetent medical student.
