Disseminated Histoplasmosis A Case Report

  • Dr. Sangeeta Aher

Abstract

Histoplasmosis is a disease of worldwide occurrence. It is a systemic mycosis caused by Histoplasma capsulatum. Although the majority of cases present as a mild to moderate flulike disease requiring only supportive therapy, approximately 5% of patients experience more serious pulmonary and extra pulmonary disease that can be life-threatening if diagnosis is delayed or if treatment is not initiated rapidly. Definitive diagnosis is usually made by a combination of culture, detection of the organism in tissues, measurement of antibodies, or detection of antigen. In India, till now only sporadic cases are reported. Most of the cases of disseminated histoplasmosis described were in patients with HIV disease or known predisposing factors for cellular immune deficiency. In India, disseminated histoplasmosis is rarely suspected. Herewith, we report a case of disseminated histoplasmosis treated successfully.
