Abstract

Introduction: Larger size of red blood cell (RBC) known as macrocytic RBC can be associated with morbidity status in severe acute malnourished children. Macrocytic condition of RBC may be magalobalstic or nonmegalobalstic anemia. Megalobalstic anemia is associated with vitamin B12 deficiency. Materials & Method: Complete blood counts were measured by automated 5-part hemato-analyzer using diagnostic kit. Field stain was used in peripheral smear for determination of microcytosis by binocular microscope.

Results: Oedema was reported in 4 out of six children while jaundice was present in all the cases. Hypopigmented hair and hyper-pigmented skin was noted in all the cases. Glossitis was present in four cases while eyes puffiness was recorded in three out of six cases. Lympadenopatheis was present in two cases while Harrison’s sulcus and cheliosis were also present in one case

Conclusion: Clinical haematological profile details of SAM with microcytic anemia would be useful the clinician to diagnosis, intervention & management of the disease.
